Last Day in San Telmo
After having spent four days in the San Telmo area of Buenos Aires I decided to spend the last day here wandering through the markets that are held every sunday. They are much like the markets we have at home except they are mostly full of antiques. The street outside my hotel had been closed for the markets to be held and the stall holders started arriving around 4.30am to start setting up.... they were very noisy, luckily I had my earplugs.
It was quite amazing to see all the old second hand goods that they were selling, plus there was lot's of shops open that were not open during the week. There was people selling old telephones, old glass soda bottles, jewelry and clothes. Even antique cutlery. I even thought that someone was selling chickens or roosters... I kept hearing this strange noise but when I finally found where the noise was coming from it was a man with some string toys that made a noise like a chicken. Very funny.
For lunch I decided to eat at one of the lovely local restaurants on Av. Defensa. I ordered a small pizza which had chicken, capsicum, olives, mozerella cheese and egg! It was very yummy. The people at the table next to me were a bit surprised to see me have a pizza on my own.... they probably thought I was attempting to eat it all at once, but I took half of it back to where I was staying and had the rest for dinner.
At the end of the day when the markets were all packed up there was a drum procession. People carrying large drums made their way through the streets banging away, as if to tell everyone it was time to leave. There was also people waving giant flags on long poles.
